Lagos State: Drunk Police Sergeant Kills Inspector

A drunken Police Sergeant has been arrested for allegedly stabbing an Inspector to death and injuring another victim.

The yet to be named Sergeant is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Yaba after the Inspector identified as Francis Adekunle died in the hospital Monday morning.

It was gathered that Sergeant went berserk at the weekend after drinking alcohol at a nearby bar and returned to his compound in Oke-Odo.

The Nation gathered that both the Sergeant and Inspector were tenants in a compound alongside other civilians. It was alleged that there have been several complaints against the Sergeant by other tenants whom he usually harassed.

On that night, the Sergeant was alleged to have engaged in his usual intimidation of civilians after being drunk and was chasing a man about with a cutlass when the Inspector, said to be attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) 2 Ikeja, intervened.

Not minding that Inspector Adekunle was his senior, the Sergeant descended on him with the machete, leaving several cuts on his legs and body.

It was gathered that the victim was rushed to the hospital where he died Monday morning.

“He drives a fully tinted Toyota Camry car with no plate number. He was reported at the Okeodo, Ile Epo Police Station for his previous actions but nothing was done to call him to order before he perpetrated this evil act.

“I saw Inspector Adekunle this evening on his hospital bed. He was still alive then. Unfortunately, I received a call from his brother, Ojo Adekunle that he just passed on.

“The doctor also confirmed his death. I am using this medium to appeal to the CP Hakeem Odumosu to do the needful and prosecute this killer Sergeant that has been terrorising everyone in the vicinity. This kind of character should not be in the Nigeria Police,” an officer lamented.

Police spokesman Bala Elkana confirmed the arrest of the Sergeant, adding that the CP has ordered investigation into the incident.

“This did not happen in the barracks. They both stay in town with other civilians. They were neither on duty nor anywhere near police facility when it happened. I have to correct that impression because a lot of people have been calling me to say it happened inside barrack.

“No matter where it happened, a crime was committed and the suspect is in custody. I will issue a statement soon on this incident,” he said.

Unity FM Abakaliki Burns To Ashes

Some sections of Unity FM Abakaliki, a subsidiary of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN), have been gutted by fire.

The fire incident, which started by 5:25 pm, affected the studio, production studio, the administrative department and the reception of the Radio Station in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital.

Staff of the station were seen running helter skelter in search of how to immediately put out the fire.

A staff, Mr Godwin Ugwuta, who witnessed the incident explained he was in the production studio when he noticed smoke emerging in the area.

Another staff who was in the live studio at the time of the incident, Mr Kelechi Ogoamaka, said he narrowly escaped death as the passage leading to the live studio had been taken over by fire when he was pulled out.

Another staff, Sunday Mbam, lamented that the fire has crippled the operations of the station.

“We may not be able to operate until the station is repaired,” he said.

The General Manager of the station, Ogbuefi Rex Eze, said he was informed  there was a bang shortly after the engineers changed from public power line to generator.

He was however grateful the fire did not affect the transmitter.

The Nation gathered that the intervention of Men of Fire Service helped to put out the fire before it could wreck further havoc.

2020 Jambites Take Note

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says candidates who participated in the just concluded 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now print their result notification slips.

JAMB disclosed this in its weekly bulletin made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

The results which had earlier been made available to candidates can now be printed free from the board’s website: www.jamb.gov.ng.

“All a candidate needs to do after visiting the site is to click on QUICK LINKS, then on `E-Facility’ where the candidate would be required to provide his or her registration details and the result notification slip would be displayed for printing.

“The printing of the result notification slip is free as it is different from the original result slip that comes with the candidate’s picture.

“Candidates can print their result notification slip anywhere in the country even from the comfort of their homes once there is internet access.’’

According to the examination body, it has, until now, restricted the printing of result notification slips.

It was made available to candidates only through SMS to avoid anxiety on the part of candidates as well as prevent clustering at cybercafés with the attendant risk of COVID-19 contagion all in a bid to print result notifications.

“This new development, however, is predicated on the gradual easing of the lockdown and resumption of economic activities in most parts of the country.

“The board wishes to advise candidates to be wary of fraudulent elements masquerading as JAMB agents stating that it has not mandated any person or group to do the printing on behalf of the board.

“Candidates are to note also that delegating this responsibility to third parties could result in wilful manipulation of their results.

“Recalls that last year some candidates who abused this privilege by attempting to manipulate their scores were caught and are currently saving various jail terms,’’ JAMB said.

The board further advised candidates to note that any attempt to forge the slip would attract stiff sanctions.

It added that the decentralisation of printing of result notification slips was done mainly to comply with the directives of the NCDC and other relevant agencies on social distancing.

“It is against this background that the board is urging candidates to note that it is incumbent on them to adhere to other precautionary health measures such as wearing of face masks, washing of hands, among others, in order to mitigate the spread of the virus,’’ JAMB added.

LAGOS:Police Arrest 185 Suspected Cultists

Police in Lagos on Sunday said they arrested 185 suspected cultists terrorising Ikorodu and environs.

Spokesman Bala Elkana said eight locally-made pistols were recovered from the suspects within the last two weeks during raids of Ikorodu, Ipakodo, Igbogbo, Ibeshe, Shagamu Road, Agbowa and others.

Elkana said the raids followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu to the Special Strike Force on social miscreants to tackle the menace of cultism in Ikorodu district.

Elkana said the operatives launched an intelligence-driven operation that targeted top cult leaders and members especially those who engaged in supremacy tussles that took lives.

“Operatives of the Special Strike Force were given clear instructions to reclaim and dominate the public spaces and ensure that no cult groups or gangs operate in any part of Lagos State.

“The Strike Force has so far arrested 185 notorious cultists and recovered eight locally made pistols and other dangerous weapons from them.

“Suspects arrested confessed to belong to Eiye, Aiye, KK, Buccaneers, Vikings confraternities, among others. One Gbadamosi Mohammed, 30, suspected to be among the cultists, who reportedly killed one Madariola Sunday at Ibeshe on May 21, was among the suspects arrested.

“Also arrested are Onibudo Afeex, Habeeb Isa, Felix Igwoke, Taiwo Iyanu at Femi Taiwo Street, Ikorodu. They were arrested in an uncompleted building holding cult meeting. One Adeoye Daya, 25, a hit man of Aiye confraternity, was arrested at Ikorodu garage with one locally made short gun.”

COVID-19: Dave’s Aides On How They Survived Corona Virus

Two aides of Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi have explained how they survived the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, saying that they were miraculously healed by God.

The aides, Prof. Ogbonnaya Chukwu, the state Commissioner for Finance and Chief Clement Nweke, Principal Secretary to the Governor, in separate statements on Monday in Abakaliki, urged the citizens to take issues concerning the disease seriously.

Chukwu, in a statement he personally signed, said that he had been out of circulation for some time, due to the COVID-19 infection.

“It should be mentioned that while I walked through the valley of death’s shadow, I saw no evil because the Lord God was with me.

“A man in white apparel appeared to me on June 1 and squeezed my stomach hard, saying that this sickness would not be unto death.

“I was on life support and my stomach rumbled for a while,” he said.

Chukwu further said that on June 2, the governor took over with words of encouragement, urging him on during the trying moment.

“He momentarily took over my management with the Chief Medical Director of the Alex-Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) and other health professionals.

“The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) ministers, led by Dr Paul Enenche, also stood in the gap and called on the God of heaven and earth.

“God’s mercy prevailed over judgment, and I am going home with a clean bill of health, having been certified COVID-19 negative,” he said.

The commissioner also thanked his family, relations and colleagues, among others for their prayers and support, declaring that COVID-19 was not a death sentence.

On his own, Nweke said that he walked out out the state’s isolation centre to join his family after spending 10 days in the facility.

“I had repeatedly tested negative for COVID-19 after being taken to the isolation centre on May 29.

“I had taken responsibility and requested to be tested for COVID-19, following a confirmed test of acute ‘plus-three’ malaria and pneumonia.

Nweke thanked the governor for his ‘rapid response’ to his case and for his foresight in establishing and equipping the state’s virology centre in Abakaliki.

“One could have imagined the difficulty that infected Ebonyi people would have faced if their samples were to be taken to Irua in Edo for testing or treatment,” he said.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Umezurike, confirmed the discharge of the two top government functionaries from the isolation centre, noting that they had tested negative twice after being treated for the disease.

“We thank God for their discharge and urge the public to continue observing all precautionary protocols outlined by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) because the disease is real,” he said.
